A Plush A Day Challenge! Day 30 - Speedy!Day 30 - Speedy

I'm not entirely sure where Speedy is from - possibly the future, or another planet? Maybe Speedy is a robot?

Whenever you're heading someplace KA-Zam! Speedy is already there. I once said "Wow! You sure get everywhere fast!" and Speedy responded with "Legs are not aerodynamic." That was kind of weird.

A Plush A Day Challenge! Day 29 - Mr. Molar!Day 29 - Mr. Molar

Welcome back! I spent a few more days recovering from the holidays and a cold in order to bring you top-notch dapper teeth plushies!

Mr. Bunodont Molar has quite a dapper wardrobe. I caught him here in the midst of a game of croquet (which is why he's removed his top hat). Apparently, winter croquet is just The Thing this year.

The Breakwater House by Pascale Quiviger

Jan. 3rd, 2010 | 06:57 pm
posted by: [info]baggyk

I've just finished my advanced reading copy of The Breakwater House by Pascale Quiviger. The book is due to be released next month by House of Anansi Press.

The book opens with a woman, Lucie or Claire, we never know which, taking possession of a house "as close to the sea as a house can get before becoming a boat." In that house, which may not exist, begins a tale of isolation and healing.

The Breakwater House is the story of a friendship recounted in the intense, dense and beautiful prose reminiscent of Fugitive Pieces or The English Patient, but to be precise, The Breakwater House is not a exactly a narrative novel. Structurally speaking, it has more in common Elizabeth Smart's long prose poem By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept than it does with Michael Ondaatje's or Anne Michaels' novels.

Prompted by the death of a child, The Breakwater House is a story where sadness, mourning and loss become tragic ornaments in a full life, rather than dark, stark features on an otherwise empty landscape. The protagonists, Lucie and Claire, are childhood friends who never separate until their story is narrated. Lucie's mother, Aurore, a woman of unknown ancestry, spins fabulous tales of her own origins and those of her daughter before abandoning the girls to each other.

Aurore's tales are the moments of illuminated imagination that breathe life into what is portrayed as a bleak existence. While Claire's mother tries to survive her miserable marriage, while their cleaning-lady comes to terms with her refuge past, while Claire's grandmother fights off death with blond hair dye and perfect grooming, Aurore tells stories. In particular, there is the story of Kathleen (Aurore's mother) whose Irish family attracts nothing but suspicion in their Quebec village and Jean (her father) who swears "to commit himself to neither woman nor demon."

For those of us who have been wondering if Canada can inspire magic realism, Quiviger's answer can be found where Irish orphans mingle with the coureur des bois.

To Do (2010 Remix)

posted by: [info]zophos

I'm not a resolutionist, but I do like a good list. Also, I feel very unorganized right now.

Here's what needs to get done some time in the next year:
• Fix Evelyn's dresser so that the drawers actually work. That $40 I spent to buy it on craigslist doesn't seem so thrifty now.
  • Sort out her clothes that don't fit anymore (anything 9 months and under) and either store or donate.
  • Sell the elliptical
  • Buy a new (to me) couch
  • Finally send off my 401(k) transfer paperwork from my job from 4 years ago. I think this may have been on last year's list as well. This year's the year!
  • Finish ripping the rest of our dvds and then store those suckers in the locker thereby freeing up valuable bookcase space.
  • Use up everything in the freezer and not replace any of it. The freezer is where things go to live for a year or more only to get thrown away when we move. I can't even identify half of what's in there currently. There are three grocery stores within a couple of blocks of us that always have things on sale so if I need meat that badly, I will just go buy it and use it right then. That veal we had the other night was $2. I have similar inclinations to get rid of our 40 lbs. of rice, but the part of me that believes in overpreparing for things with only a slight risk of happening says we should hang onto it in case of an earthquake since we'll need to eat it while the city is digging out of 20 feet of shattered glass.
  • Get my glasses fixed or replaced. Evelyn likes to rip them off my face and chew on them so the earpieces are all wonky and there are scratches all over them. I'm considering contacts, but I really like glasses even though I've had people tell me that I am "much prettier" without them. Step off, haters.
  • Get orthotic inserts for my shoes. I had one arch partially collapse due to pregnancy. I would like to keep it from going completely flat.
  • Get a check up to make sure my blood pressure isn't anything to worry about. When we had our life insurance exam, the nurse was all "whoa damn!" because my bp was 90/56. It's always been low though.
  • Get our will drawn up. Because we are Adults and we need to make sure that if we both die and Evelyn becomes a tiny millionaire that she doesn't blow it all on ponies and pop rocks.

Here are some resolutions for Josh:
  • Scan your damn film
  • Get in shape so you don't die

Last night, Mike and I rang in the New Year with a ton of our friends at the Clockwork Ball in Chapel Hill. We must have known at least half of the people in the small bar. I only manged to dance for a few minutes, because I kept getting distracted on my way to the dance floor by more wonderful people that I needed to talk with.

If it is true that you spend the year the way that you spent New Year's Eve, then I am very lucky. 2010 will be full of friends, dancing, great costumes, and much joy. I also really enjoyed having the day off today, so that I could sleep late, meet Marie for Thai food, and hang out with Mike.

I'm pretty pleased with how my steampunk aviator costume ended up, especially since I put it together in 3 days. There are several things that I want to improve and change for the next time, but it turned out fairly well.

The gloves are by far my favorite part. I knitted them in simple 2x2 rib with cheap brown yarn. Then I sewed/hot glued feathers, ribbon, gears, and wing charms on to them. Definitely fun to wear.

So goodbye 2009 and hello 2010. I really should put some thought into my New Years Resolutions this year...

I didn't post as often as I had wanted to in 2009. I always felt like there was more on my mind than I could properly express. 2010 is going to be a significant year...a year of change and, I hope, a year of things getting better.

Happy New Year.

For the most part, this year was full of great stuff. A dash of supreme suck, and then a lot of bliss - that was 2009.

Happy New Year, folks.

Later Gator Mitts
Originally uploaded by halogencat
I managed to finish my Christmas knitting just in time, barely. I worked on two projects in the car on the drive to Mississippi, and one of the projects was completed on Christmas Eve.

Projects included:
-The Later Gater gloves (pictured) for Ellen. These are easily my favorite mittens that I’ve ever made. More projects should involve googly eyes, don’t you think?
- Hurry Up Spring Armwarmers for Natalie. Purple is her favorite color, and she wears fingerless gloves every day at the office because it is so cold. She only had one pair though! New ones were required.
- Dragon Scale Cuff for Haley. 13-year olds cannot have too many pink and purple accessories.
- Quick Ribbed Cuff for Lani. The 7-year old had to have a cuff too, since I made one for her sister. I thought Lani needed yarn with sparkles.
- Brother Scarf for David. A simple scarf in good colors that alternates 10 rows of 2x2 ribbed and 10 rows garter stitch. I was pretty pleased with the finished look. Interesting, but not overdone.

I also gave the Leaf Lace Scarf to mom, the Miranda Cable Scarf to dad, and the Zig Zag Mitts to Helen. Three projects I absolutely love. They were finished earlier in the year and kept in a safe closet until Christmas.

Visiting my family in Jackson is always crazy, busy and fun. We had 13 people and 5 dogs there (my two dogs and Ellen’s dog all made the drive down with us). I think my mom personally started a sugar shortage in the US, by using all the sugar to make candy, pies, cookies, cakes, and mints. That’s just the desserts too! You couldn’t see the kitchen counter or walls of the fridge because food was piled too high. It was delicious and wonderful.

After all that eating, I had to work out. So I went to Tae Kwon Do with mom, Lani, and Haley. We went three times, and I enjoyed the classes and workout quite a bit. On the last day, the instructor presented me with a white belt, said I had earned it, and told me I should take TKD in Raleigh because I’m good. Heck Yes! Kickboxing cardio classes have paid off. I tricked them all into thinking I know what I’m doing!

Over the break, I also got to visit with my friend Chrissy and her family, see my old piano teacher (she’s 91 and still teaching!), play lots of cards and dominos, see Avatar, take the little girls to Princess and the Frog, and spend time with the fam.

Great time, but it’s also good to be home.
